Replacing a worn sprocket is easier when the measurements describe the complete assembly, not just the outside diameter. This guide covers the checks that help a maintenance team or buyer identify an existing roller chain sprocket and prepare a useful request for a manufacturer.
Start with the chain
Read the chain marking if it is still visible, then confirm the pitch and roller size with a caliper. Pitch is the center-to-center distance between adjacent chain pins. Measure a clean section of chain rather than a damaged link. Record whether the chain is simplex, duplex or triplex because the strand arrangement changes the sprocket width.
Do not identify a sprocket from its outside diameter alone. Outside diameter changes with tooth count, chain pitch and the tooth form. If the chain number is uncertain, send the chain number, pitch and roller measurement together. Those details provide a more reliable match than outside diameter by itself.
Count the teeth
Count every tooth and write the number next to the chain information. A worn tooth can be easy to skip, especially on a larger sprocket. Mark the starting tooth with a pen or a small piece of tape and count around the full circumference. If the profile is badly hooked or broken, compare the count with the mating sprocket or an available drawing.
Measure the bore and shaft interface
Measure the bore at more than one position and note whether it is a pilot bore, a finished bore, a taper bore or a QD style interface. Check the shaft diameter separately. A bore that looks correct can still be wrong for the shaft if the fit, keyway or bushing system differs.
- Bore diameter, in the unit used on the drawing or purchase order.
- Keyway width and depth, if a key is used.
- Set screw location and the number of set screws, if present.
- Any bushing, taper-lock or QD markings.
Remove burrs and rust scale before measuring. If the bore is visibly worn, record the condition and provide a measurement from the shaft or an unworn reference surface as well.
Record the hub dimensions
For a hubbed sprocket, measure the hub diameter and hub length. Note which side the hub projects from and whether the part has a hub on one side or both sides. Check outside diameter and overall width
Measure the outside diameter over the tooth tips and the total face width. Also record the distance from the sprocket face to the hub shoulder or mounting face. These dimensions help confirm clearance in the machine and catch a mismatch when the original drawing is unavailable. They are cross-checks, not substitutes for the chain pitch and tooth count.
Identify the sprocket type
- Type A plate sprocket.
- Type B or Type C hub sprocket.
- Finished-bore sprocket.
- Taper-lock or QD sprocket.
- Split sprocket for restricted installation access.
- Idler or tensioner sprocket.
Also note the strand count and the chain standard shown on the old part or drawing. ANSI and ISO or DIN chain designations are not interchangeable labels. If the marking is missing, describe what you measured instead of guessing a standard from appearance.
What to send a sprocket manufacturer
A clear request saves a round of follow-up questions. Include:
- Chain number or measured pitch and roller diameter.
- Tooth count and strand configuration.
- Bore, keyway and set screw details.
- Hub diameter, hub length, overall width and outside diameter.
- Photos of both faces, the bore and any markings.
- An existing drawing, quantity and application details.
